Examples of content management system, and which could be best for your business
A content management system (CMS) is a digitised software that enables users to create, update and edit online content, such as webpages, blog & article posts, downloadable content, and products without the need for any real technical knowledge. Essentially, a CMS allows you the opportunity to build and manage a website without the use of code.
Content management systems have revolutionised the way businesses and individuals user, interact with and create content online, and there are many different free and paid for platforms out there in the World Wide Web for everyone to use. But which CMS could be best for your business, whether you’re just starting out, expanding or transforming your brand?
3 examples of content management system
WordPress: WordPress is often considered to be the king of the blog-focussed CMS, offering users a content-first approach to their information. A prominent blogging platform, WordPress is SEO friendly, content friendly and extremely easy to use; offering landing page templates, 1000s of plugins, and the opportunity to build, edit and modify using HTML and CSS if you need to.
The ideal solution if you’re hoping to create a fairly simple, content-led approach to your business, WordPress offers users multiple levels of access, development and support dependent on your choice of payment plan, starting at free.
Shopify: Shopify is one of the most comprehensive and easy to use eCommerce CMS platforms available and is used by an impressive total of 2.1 million daily active users. It also offers easy integration with social media platforms such as Instagram and Shopify Email to help you design, write and send effective email marketing campaigns to your audiences. What’s more, Shopify offers its own, on-platform sales-orientated stats to show you how well your store is performing.
A great solution for shops and sellers looking to sell a variety of products online, Shopify users can sell physical products, digital products, or drop-shipped products via their online store – so long as any of the above is not illegal, of course!
Wix: I often think of Wix as a design-first CMS as one of the stand out benefits of building a website on Wix is their drag ‘n’ drop feature, which makes it extremely easy for users to build a good looking website easily and quickly.
This is an effective solution if you have no prior web development knowledge, you’re just starting out, or you’re developing a new business entirely on your own and short on resources, time or – of course – funds. Yes, Wix offers an opportunity for professionals to create a great starter-site!
NB: I find that Wix users sometimes transfer to WordPress sites after a time; when they outgrow their site, rebrand or redevelop their core offerings.
The importance of finding a flexible solution
Whatever content management system you choose, I feel like one of the most important things to look for is flexibility and having the option to grow and change your website as your offerings grow and change; finding a CMS that you can easily upgrade without complication or loss of content.
When you invest time and money into a website, you want it to last you, and last you well, for at least a year, ideally a fair few!
